Creative Capitalism

http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm

In this speech that Gates gave at Davos this last week he calls on big corporations and governments to start using a more creative capitalism in order to create incentives that will make it profitable for companies to use their best minds to produce goods that will help people in poor countries that need vaccines etc that the world market is not supplying for them and to sell them at a price that these people can actually afford. He uses Adam Smith's idea of the invisible hand but also addresses another one of Adam Smith's ideas, that people gain utility from helping other people. I thought this was a really great way to look at what capitalism can do for the world if governements will provide incentives for companies to do this.
I think this idea is an amazing way to look at a way to balance efficiency and equity in a society where our current market system makes the rich richer and the poor poorer at an incredible pace.
There is also an article from the Wall Street Journal on this speech that can be found at The Journal website.
